Year 8 High Potential Numeracy Program & Collaboration in Problem Solving
Selected Year 8 students work on higher-band NAPLAN numeracy questions and collaborative problem-solving tasks to build challenge, deepen mathematical reasoning, and grow confidence in advanced numeracy.
Stage 5 School Certificate Numeracy Program
Digitised School Certificate-style numeracy questions embedded into Stage 5 lessons using the Super 6 Strategies. Top-performing students form a problem-solving team to enhance reasoning, collaboration, and preparation for senior mathematics.
Young Mathematicians Program – University of Newcastle
Up to 10 high-potential maths students attend workshops at the University of Newcastle with academics and industry leaders, participating in advanced mathematical challenges and enrichment activities.
HPGE Middle School Literature Initiative – Escapism & Expressions Anthology (Year 8)
Year 8 students create a published anthology of short stories, poems and personal recounts, supported by writing workshops, excursions, peer feedback and collaborations with authors and libraries.
HSC CONNECT Education Tutoring Program
Advanced and Standard English and Mathematics masterclasses delivered online by expert tutors to selected Year 12 HPGE students, removing barriers such as cost, distance, and tutor access.
Acceleration in Music (Case-by-Case)
Students may access accelerated content depending on individual achievement and learning needs. Tailored extension pathways provided where NESA acceleration is not suitable.
HPGE Languages Karate Belt Program
Selected students who demonstrate achievement above stage expectations in Languages are invited to participate in the Karate Belt Program. This initiative provides structured extension tasks that deepen students’ understanding of Japanese language, culture, and character systems. Students progress through “karate belt” levels as they master increasingly complex language skills, promoting motivation, challenge and recognition of excellence.
HMRI Innovation Day 2026
Pending invitation to return, selected students with high potential in Biological Sciences will attend the HMRI Innovation Day, gaining access to real laboratory environments, world-leading researchers, and a competitive project proposal challenge. This program immerses students in authentic scientific inquiry and innovation experiences.
Envirothon 2026 (Awabakal Environmental Education Centre)
Year 10 and 11 students with strong aptitude and interest in Biology and Earth & Environmental Science participate in fieldwork-based challenges at the Awabakal Wetlands. Students demonstrate scientific reasoning, ecological knowledge, communication and teamwork as they compete against other schools.
University of Newcastle Science & Engineering Challenge 2026
Students engage in advanced Physics, Chemistry, Logistics and Engineering problem-solving challenges while competing against other schools. In 2026, the program aims to expand participation to Stage 4 (junior day) and Stage 5 cohorts. Provides hands-on STEM enrichment with real-world applications.
HPGE English & Mathematics Withdrawal Program
Targeted academic extension program for students with high potential in literacy, numeracy, reasoning, and cross-stage academic progression. Concurrent English/Maths timetabling allows identified students to participate in small-group withdrawal lessons focused on higher-order thinking, advanced content, enrichment projects, and potential acceleration.
